American Porch – 4th of July

We are here. We have unpacked and over the moon happy to be in our little fishing village, Mölle. Best part, Sweden is delivering fantastic weather (which is not always the case)- and looks like the warm weather is here to stay.

lkn-

First off, I have to share some pictures from our porch, a porch that we just looove and are happy we chose. We live out here. One concern I had initially was that the porch would make it dark on the inside main floor (but o-boy, I could not have been more wrong).

We decided to make our American porch as wide and deep as we possibly could given the county restrictions (limited area to build). We have our eating space on one end, and the more lounge part on the other end. It fits both and still feels spacious.

We had a ton of furniture from our old summer place, and luckily it fits here as well. In the back you spot the church bench along with a table that I just love and found some years back, (would have loved a little longer table – oh well, c’ est la vie). To that we got the classic rattan Ikea chairs that most Swedes’ have in their homes.. they look nicer with time as they turn silver gray.

I am so happy that we decided on the American black barn lights – best of all, super easy and fast process to order from Texas and have shipped to Mölle, Sweden.

Above a more close-up of the church bench, that easily sits 5-7 people…

I just love how it all turned out on the porch. Our plants are liking their new spots. Glad to be out in the sun after months in my brothers garage a few streets down.

Over in our lounge area, I have my old rattan sets’ that I have “won” on auctions. For those of you that follow me, know I love rattan and in particular in summer homes. Its ain’t a summer place without it…in my world…

Of course today, 4th of July and all – our American flag comes up! Happy 4th everyone! Love having both countries in my life – feels a little like, best of both worlds.

Enjoy the day a little extra today my friends, and thank you for checking in today. I now need to prep for our little 4th celebration but promise to check back in soon soon.

The black windows turned out great!

Those of you that follow me on Instagram, have already seen the latest from when our black windows arrived. In case you haven´t, here is a short update! Choosing black windows is the one detail I am extra excited about. Its not as common in Sweden, and its not something you necessarily associate a summer house with but I have been so inspired by homes online and magazines lately, that black windows seemed totally right for this house (and I should confess that my hubby was the one really pushing for this – so extra proud and thankful for him now after seeing the results).

Here is a little close up from delivery. Anything wrong with this picture? Well, it took us a few minutes but we spotted 2 white windows off to the left (oh no!!!). Turns out the 2 garage windows arrived in white, when they also should have been black. No major problem, seems it can easily be solved. I am just glad it did not happen to the main house and jeopardized us moving in before Christmas. One little detail I forgot to mention is that we have chosen black color on both sides (so inside as well as outside). I really think that´s gonna be the magic twist, the secrete sauce of the house…

It truly hurts being some good 5000 miles away and not being there in person to see it all live. So, I am really seeing and following the progress just like you are, through these pictures our dear friends and family take whenever they pass by. So, thank you for that!

Here´s the front side of the house. I believe there are still parts that are waiting for the final coat of paint and all the windows need additional trim work around them, but I like what I see so far! I also noticed they still have to put up the roof tiles on the entry porch.

One of the sides, again her some additional trims will be put up around the windows. Kind of like them like this, very clean and simple?? Hmm…hope the trims will not dominate too much…

Here is the back of the house, which is my favorite and where I intend to spend all my time. I am happy that we went with the big “American” porch. When I first saw the pictures, I was worried we did not make the porch big enough… but luckily we were able to face-time with our best friends when they were standing right under it and I am glad I was wrong…. the porch is big!

v34.2

I keep looking at these pictures and its just unreal and I cannot believe this is going to be our summer house! Pinch-me!

Here is one image that shows the size and depth of the porch a bit better. We intend to build a deck which will go further out, beyond where the porch roof ends and the poles are – to really maximize the space and make it as spacious as possible before the yard starts! The goal is to enjoy and spend a lot of time on this American porch of ours!

Just wanted to finish off with these nice evening pictures my friend U took around 8.30pm. This lot and house will get a lot of sun exposure all throughout the day!  Oh I just cannot wait until they start working on the inside so I get to see how the windows look from in there – looking out (well, its not like there will be a fancy backyard or lawn ready anytime soon…:)). Hopefully when we move in during Christmas the backyard will be covered with snow so we wont see the disaster…

That is all from me and my windows today! Hope you are enjoying this great week!

American Porch

My husband and I decided to ad an American porch to our Swedish summer house. After 10 years here in the US and becoming American citizens we figured we have to bring in something American to the new house? I was kinda hoping for that nice southern wrap around porch but since this lot limits us a bit as to how much we can build, we compromised to get a nice size house along with our porch. I really picture us using this porch a ton, ton tons! Just look at the porch below, its got my name ALL over it!

We are going for a wood deck and a white porch in general. We plan to extend the deck further passed the poles and where the roof ends – to make it more spacious and make sure the guests sitting on the further end don´t fall backwards… )). Our goal is to make the deck as leveled to the inside floor (want to avoid that step).

I am totally in love with the vibe on this porch above. This long plank table along with those industrial chairs is such a cool mix.  We love having dinners and friends over so the chairs will probably not be my pick from a comfy point but I admit, they look good ;). I prefer investing in more comfortable chairs so my guests stay longer and come back!

We will have our porch double doors in the middle/centered (similar to image below but our porch will be bigger and deeper). I am dividing the porch into 2 spaces. 1, eating area on the right side as you step out and 2, a more lounge sofa area on the corner left side.

The lighting is important and I have been leaning on having spotlights in the ceiling but after looking at hundred of pics on Pinterest, I like the idea of having lamps on the house facade and maybe even a centered lamp hanging over the dining table. So not sure about the spotlight anymore…

I am bringing along some furniture from our old summer place. This is not a great picture but the one I could find today. In the back you can spot part of my old long church bench in light green and an old farmers table that I think will look perfect on the porch. I also have 6 of those Ikea rattan chairs, which I will most likely use to start with…(am thinking there won´t be that much money left once we´ve built this house ;)).

I came across this image and remembered I have one of those lamps in storage. Maybe it would look good hanging over our table as well.

On the so called, lounge side of the porch I will have my rattan sofas and chairs that I usually fill with tons of cushions. To that I got our cool concrete table that my hubby and friend made. For some reason I could not find a picture of it, so you will just have to wait to see it until we´ve moved everything in..

On a different note or I should say in connection with the porch – I need to design what comes after the porch…. So, we contacted a landscape architect to help us with the overall plans and design for our lot. I have no problem listing things that I would love to include but as I was making an attempt to do the sketch myself  – I realized I need help. In this early stage we first just need a rough plan so we can prepare the lot and ground best way possible. Then closer to summer we can then focus more on the details and final layout and design. Promise to share that once we get it.

Before I go, one dream would be to ad a pool. Now I realize, it doesn´t make sense (crazy!!”#) since we wont be there as much and we live close to the water but it would just be so nice. I dont need a big one…but hey even so, its not something we would build this year anyways but I would not mind making a plan B sketch with a small pool in it (just in case)! Just look at the images I found on Pinterest….and tell me I am (not) crazy….

houzz6

Wouldn´t that be nice…oh boy, think I need to end this blogpost before I get too carried away and want a pool right away! Lets just start with a nice big porch for now! Easy to get carried away …

Hope you are enjoying your week!

I am planning on a trip to Sweden. Going over to make all the final house and detail decisions. We are finally getting started. Our builder and sales representative has been super nice to coordinate and set up all the necessary meetings for me.  It will be a busy week, will tell you more about my coming trip next time.

Porch or Balcony

Our lot is located only 2 streets up from the water, with some luck potential water view from the 2nd floor. We bought our lot as a complete jungle, we can literally not take more than a few steps in there so its impossible for us to confirm view or no view but I am hopeful (guessing 60% chance of some form of view). Before buying the lot we knocked on the next door neighbor and asked if we could see their view from their 2nd floor. Their house is located slightly further back than ours would, also they have more homes in front of them so the view will not be the same but at least it gave us an idea and we are hopeful.

When we first started to think about the house, we had our eyes set on the Myresjö house with the long balcony (right pic below). After some time, we left the balcony idea and started to think about adding an American porch instead. At the moment we are leaning towards a porch but it certainly is one of those decision we need to nail now.

A balcony would must likely ad to the view more and in some ways could ad to future sales value. Who knows. Myresjö´s house to the right has a nice balcony and looks very symmetrical. However, the porch is just not big enough to make use of it and making it bigger would just take too much of the allowed area and create a very big balcony and I cannot see ourselves really use that balcony. At the most I would perhaps “air our bed sheets”up there…so in conclusion it is more pretty than filling our needs.

I came across the Fiskarhedenvillan (left pic above) and I started to think about how much we love porches, how we said we would love one….so we changed our minds and asked the builders to quote us on that instead. Turns out the cost is more or less the same (porch slightly cheaper). The only sad thing is that we cannot create a “wrap around porch” since we would have to take too much of our total allowed building area…

We can still create a good size porch and comfortably sit 8+ around a table as well as have a comfy/lounge sitting area on the other end. I can really see us having the big window/doors open and extending the downstairs space. I realize the Swedish summers are not the same as the Southern living and how they use their porches, we will most likely need both blankets and heaters while sitting late out on the porch but hey, I gotta stay naive and romantically positive. The world is unfortunately getting warmer isn´t it, and we will still be able to see the view through the windows? So porch before balcony it is – hope we are making the right decision.

Now before I check out, I just thought I would update you on the process. The builder have started to create the construction sketches and we should have them by 2nd week of January. Once we finalize them we can send in the building permits to the county and really get started, super exciting! Stay tuned, will need your input on house placement and overall lot planning next!
